Homeowners usually learn this from a buyer's inspector, mid-transaction, with no idea whether it's a footnote or a deal-breaker. An old flue, a new fuel, and a marriage nobody planned
Most Lexington fireplaces older than the 1990s were built as wood burners: a firebox, a damper, and a chimney lined with fired clay tiles stacked like sections of square pipe, mortared at the joints. Somewhere along the way — a remodel, a gas line extension, a landlord tired of firewood — a gas log set moved into the firebox. The logs got installed in an afternoon. The flue above them was almost never touched, inspected, or resized. That mismatch is the whole subject of this page. The carbon monoxide question, answered without drama
Nobody needs a scare campaign, so here is the plain mechanics. A flue's one job is to move combustion gases up and out with no exits along the way. Cracks and gapped joints are exits. Under most conditions, draft keeps everything moving upward anyway — which is why cracked flues can serve gas logs for years without incident, and why people conclude the problem is theoretical. The conditions that break that luck are ordinary ones: a cold flue on a damp night, a house running exhaust fans, a slow-drafting oversized column doing what oversized columns do. When draft stalls, gases linger, and a cracked flue gives them somewhere to go besides up. Gas exhaust is invisible and mostly odorless; carbon monoxide entirely so. That's the risk profile — not a countdown, but a seal you can no longer vouch for on the one system whose whole purpose is containment. A CO alarm on every sleeping floor is the minimum response. A sealed flue is the actual fix.

Gas logs make eyeball diagnosis even less useful than it is on wood flues, since there's no creosote pattern to read. Sometimes that report says the tiles are intact and the marriage is fine — a result worth having on paper the next time a transaction inspector goes looking. Relining for gas: a smaller pipe doing a better job
The repair is not replacing tiles — there's no practical way to swap fired clay sections buried inside a masonry stack. The repair is a stainless steel liner: a continuous corrosion-resistant pipe run down the existing flue, connected to the gas appliance, insulated where conditions call for it, and capped. Two things make this more than a patch. The stainless column has no joints for condensate to attack and shrugs off the acidity that eats clay. And because the liner is sized to the gas appliance rather than inherited from a wood-burning past, the exhaust finally travels through a passage matched to its volume — it stays warmer, rises faster, and condenses less in the first place. The cracked tiles are still there, sealed harmlessly behind the new pipe. On most Lexington homes this is a single-day install, and it's the same prescription whether the flue serves gas logs, a gas insert, or a relined furnace flue.
