Chimney Work in Versailles

Pre-war brick was fired softer than anything made today, and the lime mortar around it was engineered — before anyone used that word — to be the sacrificial partner: softer than the brick, flexible, self-healing in small ways. Repoint that wall with a modern high-Portland mix and the roles reverse. The new mortar is now the hardest thing in the wall, every freeze-thaw cycle bears on the brick instead, and within a few winters the faces begin shearing off — permanent damage done by a repair.
